The Moreau

Pre-Hammer Races: The Moreau

The Moreau are animal-human hybrids, created by grafting specific sequences of animal DNA to human DNA and vice versa. To date all successful hybrids are mammals. Reports of strange creatures glimpsed in wilderness areas, or of bizarre corpses washing ashore, may be the results of unsuccessful attempts to create reptilian or amphibian hybrids.
Government laboratories sterilize their Moreau, but there are reports that some sterilization procedures were botches and Moreau are now reproducing on their own. Only time will tell whether the offspring will resemble their parents.
The geneticists built three ‘degrees’ of Moreau: Covert, Moderate and Overt. The most common being Moderate as they breed true

Covert Moreau appear human until they demonstrate superior physical abilities or senses. All Covert Moreau are Medium size.

Moderate Moreau are all bipedal and can pass as human if they wear hoods or hats and keep to the shadows. Moderate Moreau suffer a -10 penalty on Disguise checks to pass as human or elven. Many appear to be suffering from birth defects or random mutations rather than members of a separate species. They generally have abundant body hair but lack true pelts. All are Medium size and possess Low-Light vision.

Overt Moreau are clearly non-human and many are mistaken for magic Spawn creatures instead of Pre-Hammer genetic creations. Their size and body shapes vary widely, and they grow pelts rather than normal human hair. Most Overt Moreau find human clothing, both Encha and Techa, uncomfortable and prefer to work without or with just enough for modesty. Their pronounced muzzles accent their speaking voices, but they have no trouble speaking most languages. Overt Moreau have opposable thumbs and can use most Techa and Echa equipment without modification. They posses many of the features of their animal ancestors including whiskers, enlarged ears and teeth. Overt Moreau can pass for human or elven if they wear bulky clothing, hats and under very dark conditions and as such suffer a -20 penalty on Disguise checks to pass as human or elven. Most travel as easily on all fours as they do on two legs and many Overt Bat Moreau have fully functional wings.

Most humans, especially those within Techa Bastions, view the Moreau with fear and violence. One place noticeable absent of this prejudice is within the Bastion of Angel, the city of Genai which boasts a high number of free and independent Moreau. Most kingdoms and bastions that actively trade in slavery see the Moreau as prime slave stock as they generate no natural EDF.

Bat Moreau

Bat Moreau are a blend of Human and various Bat species. They tend to be small, quiet people with high pitched squeaky voices. Because of their unique ability to hear ultra high frequency sounds they can echolocate and are quite comfortable in complete darkness. As a result of this ability, in Pre-Hammer militaries they were heavily used as scouts and Special Forces operatives in unconventional warfare units. As such after the coming of the Hammer many Bat Moreau kept up their ‘tradition’ of stealth over brawn.
Overt Bat Moreau have large, triangular ears set high on their heads. Many have pronounced webbing between elongated fingers and a few have vestigial flaps of skin reaching from ankles to wrists. However since the coming of the Hammer and the Rise of Magic many Overt Bat Moreau have been born with fully functional wings and hands allowing them to fly without the use of technology or magic.

They tend to have a demure bearing knowing that they are attractive and use that as a weapon in of itself against other who under estimate them.

Rat Moreau

Rat Moreau are a blend of human and brown rat. Pre-Hammer governments made extensive use of Rat Moreau’s keeping breeding stock under heavy guard to make use of their rapid breeding cycle. This made Rat Moreau a source of cheap and fast produced troops. In Post Hammer times this makes Rat Moreau the most common of mutant animals to survive.
